WAnimate guest speaker Alan Murphy on The Wolfman

by wanimate on April 11th, 2010

Alan Murphy is a Perth local who has had an incredible career in animatronics, costuming, and puppetry.

Alan has created accessories for Freddie Mercury and Dame Edna Everage, constructed costumes for Red Dwarfand props for Dr Who, and brought legends to life in films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Fifth Element, Braveheart, Babe, Withnail and I, and The Last Emperor.
And his most recent job? Well, he turned Benicio Del Toro into a werewolf every day.

The monster in The Wolfman is Alan’s latest masterpiece, and the focal point of a recently released horror movie starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt.

Last month, WAnimate hosted a talk by Alan where he described what it was like to work on The Wolfman. There was so much interest in the event that we ended up changing to a larger venue!

Alan spoke at length about how he constructed the Wolfman suit, including the makeup work and gore effects, what it was like to work in Victorian England every day, and the arduous process of transforming a man into a werewolf on a daily basis.

He also encouraged audience interaction, and the talk turned into an enlightening Q&A session interspersed with fascinating behind-the-scenes images.

We would like to thank Alan Murphy for being so generous with his time and making our first “Meet the Filmmaker” event of 2010 such a great success.

WAnimate will be presenting more talks by accomplished filmmakers in the near future. Watch this space!
